- Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russia finally reached an agreement
- Putin’s friend and Belarusian president played an important role in ending the coup
- Acting as mediator, Lukashenko brokered a deal between Russia and Yevgeny
Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russia finally reached an agreement on Saturday night. Yevgeny, who talked about giving Russia a new president, took a turn in just 12 hours that he has come to the agreement table. Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, reached an agreement with Russia with the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, under which Prigozhin ordered his troops to withdraw.
Putin was so strict with Yevgeny that he would not go to Russia but to Belarus. Then Yevgeny Prigozhin suddenly announced late Saturday night that his violent, coup attempt was over.
Uturn of Yevgeny
Yevgeny Prigozhin issued a statement via the Telegram channel to an official, saying that killings can happen, so one party must understand the responsibility so that it can be prevented. We are returning our convoy and going back to the field camp as planned. Within hours of the statement, Wagner’s mercenaries were seen leaving the city in their trucks in the city of Rostov. Here people took selfies with Wagner’s soldiers and cheered them on.
Lukashenko played an important role
Putin’s friend and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko played an important role in putting down the coup. Acting as a mediator, Lukashenko brokered a deal between Russia and Yevgeny after which he ordered his troops to withdraw. According to a statement released from Lukashenko’s office, Putin was in constant contact during the conversation. A deal was then agreed upon and Yevgeny agreed to withdraw. Yevgeny will now live in Belarus. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says Wagner, head of a private Russian military company, will travel to neighboring Belarus under a de-escalation agreement and the criminal case against him will be closed.
What’s the deal?
The Kremlin has made it clear that charges against Yevgeny Prigozhin in the mutiny case will be dropped and that soldiers linked to him will not be prosecuted. Yevgeny himself will go to Belarus. In addition, fighters who participated in the uprising would not be prosecuted but instead given the opportunity to sign a contract to join the Russian army. Putin has been in power for more than two decades. To reduce the crisis, the government has accepted the agreement.
Yevgeny was not supported
In fact, Putin had caught Yevgeny’s weak vein. The kind of support Yevgeny received from the city of Rostov boosted his morale and Putin’s tension. Wagner began to move but until then Putin’s address to the nation was an emotional appeal to citizens and a warning to Yevgeny. Yevgeny has betrayed and stabbed us in the back, Putin said. Putin has communicated directly with the people of Russia and has asked such people to unite to respond.
This was the emotional side of his appeal. Along with this, he also showed strictness. Putin said that whatever the intentions of the rebels, we will crush them with the Russian army. Apart from this, Putin implemented anti-terrorist measures in Moscow and put tanks on the streets. Putin has completed all preparations to confront Yevgeny.
Yevgeny received support in Rostov but this support dwindled as his fighters advanced. Apart from this, Putin also made preparations to take strict action on the financial help received by Yevgeny. Countries like Belarus also came out in support of Putin. Here Russia started propaganda that Yevgeny was doing all this at the behest of Western powers. By doing so, he allegedly tried to humiliate Yevgeny in front of the Russian public.
