The Taliban’s supreme leader issued a message on Sunday claiming that his government has taken necessary steps to improve the lives of women in Afghanistan. Indeed, women in Afghanistan are banned from public life and work, and regulations are also imposed on girls’ education.
Steps taken for the upliftment of women
Akhundzada, an Islamic scholar who opposes women’s education and work, wrote in his message that under the rule of the Islamic Emirate, concrete steps have been taken to protect women from many traditional oppressions, including forced marriage, and protect their Sharia rights. At the same time, he added, “These necessary steps have been taken to provide women with a comfortable and prosperous life as per Islamic Sharia.”
The message was released in five languages
This message of Akhundzada was released in Arabic, Dari, English, Pashto and Urdu languages. “Women’s status as an independent and dignified human being has been restored and all institutions are obliged to help women secure marriage, inheritance and other rights,” the Taliban said after taking over Afghanistan in August 2021, marking the beginning of a more moderate regime than during their previous tenure in power in the 1990s. Despite promises, drastic measures have been taken.
Ban on public places for women
Akhundzada has banned women from public places such as parks and gyms and curtailed media freedom. These measures taken by the government have created an international uproar. At such a time, the isolation of the country has increased and its economy has collapsed and the humanitarian crisis has increased.
A call for an end to interference in Afghanistan’s affairs
Akhundzada reiterated his call for other countries to stop interfering in Afghanistan’s internal affairs. He said that the Taliban government wants good political and economic relations with the world, especially Islamic countries, and has fulfilled its responsibility in this regard. Akhundzada’s message also condemned Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and called on the Sudanese people and government to put aside their differences and work together for unity and brotherhood.
