A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Saturday adjourned the hearing in the sedition case of former Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhary. The judge accepted Fawad Chaudhary’s plea of acquittal and directed him to appear in court on July 4 for trial.
Fawad Chaudhary did not appear in court
The court’s decision came after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s former aide Fawad Chaudhary did not attend the proceedings. Additional Sessions Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra resumed the hearing on Saturday.
The lawyer said that Fawad is ill
During the hearing, Fawad Chaudhary’s lawyer said that his client could not attend the court due to illness and sought exemption from today’s hearing. After hearing Fawad Chaudhary’s lawyers, the judge asked if the former minister had suffered a heat stroke.
A case of sedition was registered
In early January, Islamabad police arrested Fawad Chaudhary from his home on charges of threatening members of the Election Commission of Pakistan. A case has been registered against Fawad Chaudhary at Kohsar Police Station in Islamabad.
A case was registered under various sections
The case was registered following a complaint by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Umar Hameed Khan. Former minister Fawad Chaudhary was booked under Sections 153-A, 506, 505 and 124-A (sedition) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Condemnation of May 9 incident
According to media reports, earlier in May, Fawad Chaudhary had said that the people of Pakistan were at the mercy of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari. Addressing a joint press conference with PTI defectors Imran Ismail and Mehmood Maulvi, Chaudhary said that we all have condemned the May 9 incident and those responsible should be punished according to law.

Blaming the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government for political and economic uncertainty in Pakistan, Fawad Chaudhary said Pakistan’s 250 million population cannot be left at the mercy of Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif. “Given the state of affairs in Pakistan, it is not possible at any cost to leave the opposition’s position empty and give the PDM an open field to play,” Chowdhury said.
