PakistanFormer Prime Minister Imran Khan’s troubles are not abating. An anti-corruption court has issued a summons to PTI chief Imran Khan to appear on Monday for allegedly buying 625 acres of land in Punjab at a very low price. Along with Imran, the court has also issued summons to his sister Uzma Khan and her husband Ahad Majeed in the scandal known as Laiyah land scam. An Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) spokesperson said that Imran has been asked to appear at the ACE headquarters on June 19, while his sister and her husband have to appear before the ACE DG.
Evidence of involvement in scam against Imran
Earlier, Imran was summoned on June 16, but he did not appear. ACE spokesperson said, there is strong evidence against Imran Khan of his involvement in the scam. Evidence has been found that revenue officials were pressured into the illegal transfer of land from Imran Khan's official residence, the spokesman said.
According to an ACE spokesperson, the land was purchased at a low price in 2021-22 and Uzma and Majeed fraudulently got the land transferred in their names. The market value of the land is around Rs. 6 billion, he added, adding that the land was bought cheaply and cheaply when the Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced assistance for the Greater Thal Canal project aimed at providing irrigation facilities to barren lands through the Thal Canal.
Complaint of forced purchase of land from people
Uzma had prior knowledge of the project and the couple forced the landlords to sell their land, the spokesperson said. He said that the land owners have filed a complaint against Uzma and others for forcibly buying their land. ACE said last week that the suspect used political influence to grab land from local people who have lived there for many years.
The role of other officials involved in the fraud will be probed, the spokesperson said. Imran Khan was booked in Laiya land corruption case on Sunday. The total number of cases against him has now crossed 140 since he resigned as Pakistan's prime minister in April last year. Imran Khan's cases are mostly related to terrorism, incitement to violence, arson, blasphemy, attempted murder, corruption and fraud.
