- Flash floods in Indonesia spread cold lava across the region
- Climate change has increased the incidence of natural disasters
- After the death of 28 people, rescue operations are in full swing
Flash floods and cold lava from a volcano in western Indonesia killed 28 people. An Indonesian government agency said that the accident took place on Sunday afternoon. In which heavy rain fell in Agam and Tanah Datar districts of West Sumatra province. After which there was a sudden fire. After the flood in Mount Merapi, cold lava was spreading all over the area and people were drowning in this lava. However, the local and government system started the rescue operation after the incident was reported.
Cold lavas from volcanoes are known as lahars. Ash, sand and gravel are found in this. This is brought down the slopes of the volcano by heavy rainfall. According to the information received, an organization shared the information on social media. In which, large rocks and soil landslides are seen on the roads of West Sumatra. The accident comes two months after a devastating flood hit the same island.
Natural disasters keep happening
Following the floods, authorities have dispatched a team of rescuers and rubber boats to search for missing victims and evacuate people to shelters. Meanwhile, the local government set up evacuation centers and emergency checkpoints at several places in both districts to extend help. It should be noted that Indonesia is prone to landslides and floods during the rainy season. Last week, landslides and floods damaged homes and roads in South Sulawesi, killing 15 people.
The claim that climate change is responsible
Earlier in March, the bodies of at least 26 people were found after landslides and floods in West Sumatra. The flood also brought down cooled lava from Mount Merapi. It is the most active volcano in Sumatra and one of about 130 active volcanoes in the Indonesian archipelago.
According to the information, apart from this, there was an explosion in Marapi in December last year and ash flew up to a height of three thousand meters in the sky. Which was even higher than the volcano. At least 24 mountaineers, including university students, were killed in the blast. In particular, Indonesia has been experiencing other natural disasters recently during the rainy season. According to experts, it is due to climate change.
