Indians are the top remitters from abroad. Presenting the figures, the United Nations Migration Agency said that in the year 2022, 111 billion dollars were sent from other countries to India and this figure is the highest compared to any other country in the world. With remittances of $111 billion, India has become the first country to cross the $100 billion mark, where such a large amount has been remitted abroad in a single year. There are about 20 million non-resident Indians living in other countries, who send billions of dollars to their families each year, called remittances.
Migration report released
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) yesterday released its World Migration Report 2024, which said India, Mexico, China, the Philippines and France are the top five countries receiving the most remittances. Along with this, Pakistan and Bangladesh are also included in the top 10 list. In this regard, there are four Asian countries in the list of top 10 remittance recipients.
4 of the top 10 countries receiving the most remittances are from Asia
According to the report, in the year 2010, India received 53.48 billion dollars as remittances. NRIs remitted $68.19 billion in 2015 and $83.15 billion in 2020 to their families. The report states that South Asia has the largest number of migrant workers, so it is the leading recipient of remittances across the world. Pakistan received $30 billion and Bangladesh $21.5 billion as remittances.
These rupees are like a lifeline
The report also said that remittances from migrant workers working abroad are a lifeline for many, but numerous migrant workers here are facing several problems, including financial crisis. The economic burden on them increases due to migration costs. While at work, one has to face things like workplace misbehavior and xenophobia. Xenophobia means dislike of foreigners.
Most of the citizens of India live abroad
Indians have the highest number of people going to study and work in other countries. India has the largest number of migrants in the world. About 1 crore 80 lakh Indians live abroad. This is 1.3 percent of the country’s total population, most of whom live in the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Saudi Arabia.
Most of the migrants go to the Gulf countries
The report said that most of the people from countries around the world go to the Gulf countries. The share of migrants in the total population of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is still high. It is 88 percent in UAE, 73 percent in Kuwait and 77 percent in Qatar. India ranks 13th in terms of foreign nationals coming to the country. 44 lakh 80 thousand tourists live here.
Most people go to America to study
Most of the children from all over the world go to study in America. In the year 2021, 8 lakh 33 thousand tourist students went for studies. 6,01,000 students went to study in United Kingdom, 3,78,000 in Australia, 3,76,000 in Germany and 3,18,000 in Canada. At the same time, China has the highest number of people going abroad to study, followed by India. In the year 2021, 5,08,000 Indian students went to study abroad, compared to double the number in China. According to the report, the top 10 countries for movement of citizens between the two countries are India-UAE, India-US, India-Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh-India. This means that the citizens of these countries stay in each other’s country the most for work, study and other reasons.
