Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Bagle met with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene, the two discussed the proposed roadmap for cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. The Indian Ambassador assured the Sri Lankan PM of increasing passenger flight connectivity between the two countries.
Keen to operate flights to destinations in Sri Lanka
The PM’s office issued a release on Thursday noting that Indian High Commissioner Gopal Bagle, citing tourism growth, said India would take steps to increase flights between the two countries. It was also stated that public sector as well as private airlines are keen to operate flights to Sri Lankan destinations.
Four billion dollars in aid was provided
Last year, India and Sri Lanka resumed direct flights between Jaffna and Chennai with four weekly flights by Alliance Air. During the discussion, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister called for more Indian investment in areas such as digitalisation, alternative energy and agriculture.
PM Gunawardene also thanked India for supporting Sri Lanka’s dialogue with the International Monetary Fund and for the assistance provided during the economic crisis. When Sri Lanka was drowning in economic crisis, India provided nearly four billion dollars in aid.
