Coca Cola: There is a risk of cancer from drinking Coca-Cola. This has been said by the World Health Organization (WHO). In issuing the warning, he said that aspartame, an artificial sweetener used to sweeten Coca-Cola and other beverages and foods, poses a cancer risk. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in July will add aspartame to the list of substances that may cause or increase the risk of cancer. Aspartame is used in everything from Coca-Cola, diet soda to Mars Xtra chewing gum and several other beverages.
WHO does not yet know how safe it is to consume products containing aspartame
WHO has not yet stated how many products containing aspartame are safe to consume. A separate expert committee of the WHO has suggested how much a person can consume a harmful substance. Usually this recommendation is given by the joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).
JECFA is reviewing the use of aspartame
WHO’s Committee on Additives JECFA is reviewing the use of aspartame this year. In 1981, JECFA stated that aspartame is safe if consumed up to a limit per day. For example, if a 60 kg person drinks 12-36 cans of diet soda per day, he is taking a risk. Aspartame was researched in France last year. Meanwhile, a study was conducted on one lakh people who consumed artificial sweeteners. It found that people who consumed large amounts of artificial sweeteners (including aspartame) had an increased risk of cancer.
10 teaspoons of sugar in a small bottle of cold drink
According to a research report, even a small 350 ml can of cold drink contains 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. On the other hand, the WHO report says that consuming more than 5-6 teaspoons of sugar a day is dangerous. That is, after drinking a small bottle of cold drink, you have met your two to three day quota of sugar. According to a report (2015) by the New Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), such beverages are directly responsible for nearly 2 lakh deaths every year.
