After the earthquake, the severe floods caused havoc in Brazil. Heavy rains on Sunday caused river levels to rise once again in southern Brazil. So far 145 people have died due to floods. Residents of Rio Grande do Sul are facing hardship due to heavy rains. Due to torrential rains for two weeks, the river water has entered the cities and some areas of the regional capital, causing severe hardship to the people.
20 lakh people affected due to severe destruction
Around 20 lakh people have been affected due to this terrible disaster. Meteorologists are linking this to climate change El Niño. According to the state administration, the water level of all major rivers is rising. 132 people are missing from the flood. While 619,000 people have left their homes to go to safer places. Rescue work is ongoing in the flood affected area.
Local people talked about the current situation
In Porto Alegre, household items such as sofas and other items were seen floating in the flood waters. Several cars were half submerged in water in Sao Leopoldo. Claudio da Silva, a 36-year-old electrician, went into the neighborhood to assess the situation. He said his house was completely destroyed. Talking about the current situation, he said, “The house next to my brother-in-law’s house was flooded up to the second floor. Now the water level has gone down a little and you can go up to the second floor, but everything is ruined.”
Antonio Venzone, 50, described the situation as dire. “What will happen if the rain doesn’t stop? The river level has risen,” he said. The situation worsened in the town of Pelotas, south of Porto Alegre. Around 14 lakh people’s houses were submerged here.
