“As Associates of Congress, we urge donors and folks affiliated with Columbia College to condemn the antisemitic incidents happening on the university’s campus by pulling donations and guidance for the college until there are demonstrable improvements in management, such as the resignation of Columbia College President Minouche Shafik,” Household Republicans, led by Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., wrote in an open letter to the Ivy League’s wide and influential alumni and donor community.
For times, college students at Columbia and its sister school, Barnard College, have camped out on the Upper Manhattan campus whilst holding demonstrations in protest of Columbia’s investments in businesses with ties to Israel. It’s section of a broader progressive backlash towards Israel’s reaction to Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror assaults from the Jewish condition.

But that protest and related kinds cropping up at schools close to the state are now going through bipartisan backlash and accusations of acquiring waded into antisemitic territory.
Social media video clips from the anti-Israel tent encampment on Columbia’s campus display activists cheering on the deaths of Israeli troopers and displaying aid for Hamas. Jewish pupils have claimed emotion unsafe on campus and shared stories of becoming verbally and bodily assaulted.
“They had been pushing and shoving me… They threw rocks at my deal with. At that second, my existence was thoroughly threatened. And there was no security authority on campus,” 1 university student advised NY1 about the weekend.

In their open up letter, the House GOP lawmakers urged donors to adhere to the example of Robert Kraft, the billionaire operator of the New England Patriots, who pulled his support before this week in reaction to the protests.
“We motivate all supporters of the college to do the same and simply call for the resignation of President [Minouche] Shafik,” they wrote.
“The college need to also deliver a complete critique of all university funding and examine the exterior forces influencing college students and agitators to take part in these disruptive and violent incidents that focus on and intimidate Jewish students on campus,” they continued.
“Moreover, we urge all people affiliated with the university to phone for a clear and comprehensive audit of all university funding relating to the anti-Israel motion on campus, and what outside teams are contributing and influencing learners and agitators to take part. ”

It arrives a day after Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., traveled to Columbia with Household Education and learning and Workforce Committee Chair Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., and a few New York Republicans, exactly where he denounced the protests and reiterated his before call for Shafik to resign.
