To the Editor:
Re “Can These on the Remaining Be Satisfied?,” by Ross Douthat (column, April 7):
Mr. Douthat thinks, citing no proof, that men and women on the left are “by nature” unhappier than moderates or conservatives, in section mainly because he thinks we really don’t think in God any longer.
The remaining is not “by nature” sad we are normally brutally genuine with ourselves and unavoidably empathetic to the plights of these who go through. I have on those features as a badge of honor.
If we truly feel far more sad these days, it’s not due to the fact it’s in our genes. It is mainly because we see the truths of our planet — the radical disruptions from engineering, the very true threats of local climate alter, the distortions of our financial state that depart so quite a few behind, and the threat of political violence and fascism on our doorstep (many thanks to, um, the God-fearing suitable). We see it all with clarity and are hence determined to transform it.
I’m a very pleased liberal who is established and hopeful, and delighted most of the time. I never know if I consider in God, but I believe Jesus was pretty amazing, and what I mainly assume is that we’d all be a ton much better off if additional of all those on the appropriate (particularly the politicians) would reside their life as if they thought Jesus was brilliant way too.

To the Editor:
Ross Douthat is correct to assert that folks on the left have become pessimistic. He attributes a great deal of the left’s poor temper to its drift away from “the Christianity of the American social gospel tradition” and its message of “fundamental optimism.”
But did the still left drift away from faith, or did faith stray from its mission? As a still left-leaning spiritual leader, I have to acquire Mr. Douthat to job for failing to accept that lots of of the most influential American spiritual institutions seem to have turn out to be unmoored from any gospel of social, financial or environmental justice.
I picture that it is hard for a youthful man or woman these days to come to feel that aged-time religion-centered optimism when the loudest preachers in America deny the really existence of the forces that threaten young life the most, this sort of as climate alter and the erosion of our democracy.

To the Editor:
Ross Douthat miracles if modern day liberals, in the absence of spiritual or ideological certainties, can be delighted. I’ll confess that it can be a challenge, if you treatment about human suffering and injustice and you really don’t believe you are confirmed achievement or a reward for your attempts to aid.
All I can say is, obtain pleasure where you obtain it — in encouraging a boy or girl experience safe, content and empowered encouraging the pretty aged know they even now have benefit tending your backyard, dwelling and relationships truthful work. If all we’re carrying out is developing zones of appreciate and magnificence in an uncertain entire world, it is however worth doing.

To the Editor:
It’s reassuring to learn from Ross Douthat that our conservative mates are so pleased. They frequently just look terrified. Terrified of getting their blood poisoned by people today who really don’t appear like them, of guides with unfamiliar tips, of individuals who adore in a different way and of lower-revenue folks who could finagle an undeserved advantage.
They appear so frightened of their fellow citizens that they would fairly prohibit voting than chance democracy. So frightened, in reality, that they observe a chief who bellows about blood baths, carnage and Earth War III. It seems that these pals of ours are stockpiling guns while we liberal dupes go birding or to concerts. I’m not sure I envy that sort of contentment.

To the Editor:
What an absurd assertion that “the remaining-wing temperament is, by mother nature, unhappier than the moderate and conservative options.” Embracing development to enhance our great deal now by functioning toward fairness, equity, sustainability and community as opposed to pinning hopes on some afterlife doesn’t make one particular unsatisfied. It will make you a affordable, dependable (and dare I say, happy) human.

Ross Douthat declares that all those on the left cannot be satisfied and points out why.
I’m no professional, but if I experienced to detect an unsatisfied political course, I’d be inclined to cite the appropriate instead than the remaining. Can the snarling Associates Jim Jordan and James Comer maybe be content? Does Ann Coulter radiate sunshine? Is it pleasure that moves Donald Trump to predict blood baths and to model immigrants as animals? Do the crowds that cheer him on glimpse serene and content material?
I regard Mr. Douthat, but I imagine he is useless completely wrong this time.

To the Editor:
Even though a liberal, I normally enjoy Ross Douthat’s observations, but declaring that moderate to suitable conservatives are happier than their counterparts on the remaining is patently risible.
The only basis I can see for this conclusion is that not caring about the welfare of other individuals should be conducive to greater slumber at evening. But then how to make clear the require for a completely automatic AK-47 on the night stand and two in the residing home? Or their fealty to that happiest of satisfied warriors, Donald Trump?

In my working experience as a working towards medical psychologist for more than 35 years, I see individuals each on the left and on the proper politically who are unsatisfied. I resent Ross Douthat’s implied belittling of psychotherapy for those who are “comforted by neither God nor history, and hoping vaguely that remedy can take their position.”
I consider that this disparages the dedication patients provide to their perform in treatment, as perfectly as the function of the industry experts who deal with them.

“Can All those on the Left Be Happy?” Of course!
With the order of my Trump Bible and gilded sneakers, I come to feel a warm, cascading, virtuous happiness and contentment washing away my grimy liberal bile!
