Sarah Harris has explained how having children changed her from a story-chasing journalist with a bad smoking habit to a proud mother of two.
The Project host shared the story of her transformation in the new book Parenting in Progress by Mel Wilson, an extract of which was published by news.com.au.
‘When I started [in TV], you had to chase hard. I was this pack-a-day smoker, out on the road, door-knocking people’ the 42-year-old said.
‘I was like a proper chain-smoking journo. These kids saved my life in so many ways. There’s a saying that goes, “Before kids life was black and white, but after kids it becomes Technicolor.”‘
Women who smoke a 20-pack of cigarettes daily are 13 times more likely to die from lung cancer than women who don’t smoke, according to research.
A former smoker’s cancer risk drops by half after a decade of not smoking.
Harris went on to explain that despite her impressive career, having a family was her greatest achievement.

‘Having children, I think, has been the making of me, and probably my greatest feat to date,’ Sarah said.
‘It’s one of the things I’m most proud of, something I find I’m so comfortable doing, even though I don’t get it right all the time.’
Harris announced her split from IT specialist husband Tom Ward in March 2021, after seven years of marriage.
The former couple share custody of sons Paul, seven, and Harry, five.

Harris is believed to be single, and last year denied persistent rumours that she is dating Dr Chris Brown.
Radio presenters Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson weren’t convinced by the reports so called up Harris live on air to get answers at the time.
‘You know my aunt called and checked as well. No, it’s hogwash,’ Harris said, adding that she had ‘no idea’ where the tabloids got the story from.
‘I haven’t even had my second coffee yet, you two,’ she laughed. ‘I’m too busy and boring [for this].’
