Participant won its share of Oscars and critics prizes, but this movie would have to be its most audacious results: a pulse-quickening gamble that took on actual-existence sexual predation in the Catholic Church. Just as movingly (and not only to this author), “Spotlight” burnishes the righteous ability of the press, chasing down a tale on fumes and creating a variation in the newsroom and beyond. There is no weak hyperlink in the assembled cast, a group that includes Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, John Slattery and Liev Schreiber, all plausible as pavement pounders for the Boston World. Comparing “Spotlight” to “All the President’s Adult men,” even flatteringly, was pretty much also-faint praise. It’s a film that, if experienced at the ideal age, can change somebody into a journalist. (Starz) — Joshua Rothkopf
