Members of the Houston hip-hop community stated their goodbyes and celebrated the everyday living of community hero Massive Pokey at a memorial support around the weekend.
The funeral took area Saturday at Fountain Praise church in southwest Houston, in accordance to the Houston Chronicle. Huge Pokey, whose lawful identify was Milton Powell, died June 18 right after collapsing onstage in the course of a Juneteenth display at a bar in Beaumont, Texas.
The influential rapper and first member of hip-hop collective Screwed Up Click on was 48. No lead to of death has been provided.
Between people who attended the memorial service were being Houston politicians, songs executives, rappers and Screwed Up Simply click artists. Mourners integrated Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), as nicely as musicians Paul Wall, Lil’ O, Yungstar, DJ X.O., Killa Kyleon, Trae tha Truth, Slim Thug and Lil’ Keke, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Prior to the funeral on Saturday, a community viewing for the beloved “Hardest Pit in the Litter” artist was held Friday at St. John’s Downtown Church in Houston, and a group celebration took place June 25 at Yellowstone Park. The no cost local community party featured food stuff trucks and songs curated by DJ Huge Tho.
Huge Pokey is survived by his spouse of 16 years and a few small children.
“The City of Houston and I prolong our prayers and condolences to our have Screwed Up Click famous rapper #BigPokey family members and close friends,” Turner tweeted shortly after the rapper’s demise.
“Though many identified as him ‘low important,’ his existence was bigger than lifetime in assisting to catapult our hip hop scene nationally. We are grateful.”
