While there is no confirmation that any original Heroes cast members will return, the report does tease there will be, ‘familiar villains’ along with ‘new enemies.’
The original series debuted on NBC in the fall of 2006, and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, following characters from all over the globe discovering their powers.
Among the show’s breakout stars were Hayden Panettiere as Claire Bennet, a Texas cheerleader who can regenerate, making her virtually indestructible, and Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura, a mild-mannered office worker who can manipulate space and time.
The show also proved to be the breakout role for Zachary Quinto, who played the villainous Cylar and Milo Ventimiglia as nurse Peter Petrelli, who can mimic others’ abilities.
The sprawling ensemble cast also included Jack Coleman (Noah Bennet), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder Suresh), Greg Grunberg (Matt Parkman), James Kyson (Ando Masahashi), Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli) and Cristine Rose (Angela Petrelli).
The show was among the most popular to debut in the 2006-2007 TV season, nominated for an Emmy for Best Drama Series.
The show suffered – like many others – due to the writers strike in 2007, resulting in a truncated second season.
The departure of writer Bryan Fuller – who wrote many key episodes in Season 1 but left before Season 2 after ABC picked up Pushing Daisies – is also seen by some as one reason the show’s quality dropped off so quickly.

The show was canceled after just one 13-episode season on NBC, with a six-chapter web series preceding it to introduce the new characters.
