A few factors to appreciate about Los Angeles: very low-rider vehicles, roadside taco stands, and, occur awards season, the omnipresent “For Your Consideration” billboards that pitch a show, album, or film to win their respective trophies. Nobody is aware of this superior than lifelong L.A. resident Lorely Rodriguez, also recognized as Empress Of. The indie-pop darling’s latest record, For Your Thought, is her get on what it indicates to have your whole self considered in all of its guises. Tunes like “What Variety of Woman Am I?” and “Lorelei” ask self-reflexive concerns begging for responses some others, like “Fácil” and “Cura,” glance to the dance flooring, relying on Latin pop beats courtesy of some of the most innovative producers in underground electronic music suitable now. The pretty much genreless file is so wildly catchy and amazing in scope — all of the percussion on the file is really Rodriguez’s voice — that Switched On Pop host Nate Sloan and producer Reanna Cruz experienced to consider For Your Consideration with Empress Of herself in the Metropolis of Angels. As she informed us about the new album, “I’m just seeking to make songs that seems like me.”
Nate Sloan: Let’s start with “Lorelei,” one of the album’s most private tracks. What does this song suggest to you?
I have been attempting to produce this track for years. My identify is Lorely, and I always get referred to as Lorelei. And the tale of this track is kind of like my “Jolene.” I had a thing with somebody, and he experienced a girlfriend. And I, like, woke up in his home one day and discovered a woman’s shoe.
N.S.: Damn.
Yeah, and I was like, “Okay, whose shoe is this?” And I usually considered about how she have to have felt. It’s not fantastic figuring out that a person else is likely as a result of that. So I just needed to produce that track.
N.S.: When you hear to “Lorelei,” it is vibrant, it is poppy, it’s catchy. How did you pick out to match that vivid sound with these heavier lyrics?
I feel like it is been my reward as an artist to make sad tunes that you can shake ass to. You know? I’m Your Empress Of also has a lot of dance tracks that you can shift to. One of my icons, Robyn, also makes unfortunate songs. Sad tracks on the dance flooring!
Reanna Cruz: You worked with a whole lot of underground producers on this history: Umru on “Fácil” and “Sucio,” Nick León on “Cura.” How did all those abrasive electronic appears locate their way into the recording system?
Thank you, DMs — I A&R’d by DMs. I’m a enthusiast, and I constantly glimpse up who performs on data. I followed Umru and Nick León for years and needed to operate with them. I feel that they’re equally doing exciting matters in the dance house. They DJ so significantly, and I imagine each of them tactic it in different techniques. Nick will make foreseeable future dance reggaeton. And I just was like, I just can’t do that. But I would like to be motivated by that, since a large amount of that music is rhythmically pushed but has wonderful top rated strains and very little melodies occurring everywhere. He’s a G.
R.C.: You explained you sense like you just can’t make long run dance reggaeton. Why?
I really feel like I’m actually very good at other points, you know? But I also truly feel like my career can go in so numerous techniques for the reason that I’m kind of genreless. So why not be influenced by an artist like that? Or Umru, who has produced so significantly songs in the Pc Music college. But I do not make Personal computer-sounding audio. I get in with Umru, and I’m like, “Let’s compose an Empress Of track.” That is the beauty of collaboration.
N.S.: On 1 of the tracks that Reanna just described, “Cura,” you sing in each English and Spanish. There are other tracks on the album, like “Feminine,” when you sing fully in Spanish. On previous albums, you have had some Spanish-language tracks, but this album feels like a true mix. What inspired you to make a pivot towards a much more multilingual audio?
Earning 4 albums. And I have been producing Spanglish tunes given that the starting of my job, but I have by no means built so much songs in Spanish. I just found it to be the tale of this document in a way. And also Miami! I was in Miami with Nick León and I was really influenced. I continue to say factors the way I would say them as Empress Of in English or Spanish, but part of the inspiration is just becoming in a town in which — like in L.A., absolutely everyone speaks Spanish, but Miami, it is even in the clubs. I was, like, respiration it.
Another point: This record is so vocally motivated. So a large amount of the drums on the document and on “Cura” are basically my voice. I commenced this report with just beatboxing and microphones. “Fácil” is so significantly my voice — even the bass is my voice.
R.C.: You just cannot even inform.
Yeah, you cannot, but probably it is subliminal.
N.S.: It can make me consider of the opening observe, “For Your Consideration.” The initial matter you hear there is respiration in this percussive drum sample.
I was like, “Just transform the mic on and I’m just gonna go, [Making mouth noises]!” And then chopping it up and pitching it right until it sounds like a defeat. I was incredibly motivated by Björk’s Medulla and Caroline Shaw, who’s a composer. I just enjoy the voice.
N.S.: You talked about Miami remaining an influence on this report. What about the influence of Los Angeles? The deal with of this album features you straddling a shooting star with L.A. laid out behind you.
L.A. is constantly an inspiration, and I wanted to demonstrate it in a distinct way on this document. The history is known as For Your Thing to consider, and I observed those people billboards my whole lifestyle. That phrase has these a that means in the leisure sector. I have also been called underrated so significantly — you know, it’s like ten yrs of executing this, four information. And I was just like, you know what? I do not care. I’m heading to select myself. I just required to be tongue in cheek and have a very little fun.
My preliminary idea was to be painted gold since I was like, For your thing to consider, I’ll be a statue. But when I talked to the photographer, she was like, “I think we require to go extra camp with it.” She despatched me astounding references of strategies from the early 2000s and late ’90s, and she was like, “You have to be laughing and you have to be throwing your head back. Simply because you’re on a taking pictures star about the backdrop of L.A. and your album’s identified as For Your Consideration!”
N.S.: I feel like when I’m driving all over L.A. when awards year will come around, and I see all those billboards, I’m just gonna listen to that tune in my head now.
I love saying that phrase. And it is like, even if I didn’t get any notoriety or awards, I just come to feel like I’m presently myself. My dream during that period is to have a “For Your Consideration” For Your Thought billboard.
N.S. Is there a monitor on this album that you experienced to seriously shape to get it to the location you required it to be?
“For Your Consideration.” I don’t know what you would call that. Just pop? There is so lots of matters. The rhythm, the breaths. I was listening to Britney Spears’s “How I Roll.” You would hardly ever be like, “Oh, Caroline Shaw and Britney Spears’s ‘How I Roll’ are the recipes for a song.” But of course!
R.C.: Your 2020 album, I’m Your Empress Of, and its title monitor truly feel like a thesis assertion for you and your artistry. So what is Empress Of to you now, Lorely?
It is demanding what ever I am in the minute. The joke of my occupation has been “Empress of what?” In all places I go. And I’m like, I really stick to my name and what an empress is and what that tarot card stands for. That divine feminine power and the area to create and to mom a venture.
