Yes, we are conscious: the shag haircut isn’t really specifically new. The choppy, layered hair glance — typically styled with tons of texture — was popularized back in the 1970s, but it has since designed a huge comeback, in particular amid our favourite celebs. Nevertheless, this new model is a fresh new get on the craze.
What you’re looking at on seemingly each individual A-lister from Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez to Billie Eilish isn’t what you would see many years ago. The current version of the shag is what hairstylist Devin Toth says is the coolest haircut craze of the 12 months, and we absolutely see why.

“The two preferred shag types will be ultra curly, extremely layered, and then straight with very long curtain bangs that sweep,” Toth tells PS. “The curly shag is incredibly spherical with a pure release of texture. It will be a seamless transition from bangs to short layers to long levels to bottom size. The straight shag can be styled however you want, but it usually has for a longer period layers with the target of the type staying the bold curtain bangs — sweeping but not entirely connected to the rest of the type.”
