Bono has thoughts about Coldplay.
The U2 frontman, 62, mentioned that the new music team led by Chris Martin “are not a rock band” all through BBC Sounds’ eight-component Music Uncovered: The Genius of Coldplay podcast collection.
Bono bought into the discussion about Coldplay to start with by praising their 2002 track “Clocks” from their second studio album, “A Rush of Blood to the Head.”
“It just sort of sticks to you, tighter than time alone,” the Irish musician reported about the track.
He recalled “punching the air in a manly but not intense way” when he listened to the track for the 1st time — “and then the emotion of, ‘oh, this is just superior than everyone else’s music at the moment.’”
Then, Bono built his massive declaration about Coldplay: “I really should point out Coldplay are not a rock band. I hope that is evident. There is a thing much much more exciting likely on there like the Isley Brothers or a little something.”
According to Bono, Coldplay — whose associates include Martin, 47, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Phil Harvey — “should not be judged by rock regulations.”
“Rage is the river running underneath most rock formations,” Bono continued. “Coldplay’s tunes has a unique source and I believe it’s best uncovered in this track ‘Clocks.’ “
