State broadcaster CCTV footage showed thick smoke billowing from the Qiantai New Materials Company facility. The media of the state has given information about this. At least two people have died and 12 are missing after a massive explosion at a chemical plant in northeast China. Another 34 people were injured in the explosion on Sunday outside the city of Panjin in Liaoning province, east of the capital Beijing. Local government news releases showed images of flames and thick black smoke billowing from the complex of chemical processing machinery, pipes and storage containers.
The government of Panshan County, a suburb of the city, said in a news release that firefighters had brought the blaze under control and that the local environment department was monitoring the impact on air quality in the area.
Officials said the cause of the accident is being investigated. People posting on social media said they felt the shock of the blast but the damage did not extend beyond the plant.
