One year and two days ago, Timothée Chalamet debuted as the “fragrance ambassador” for Bleu de Chanel, a fragrance “for the man who is deeply himself.” That means we finally have the goods to answer the question: “Was this ad worth getting absolutely wrecked by a camera?” Your mileage may vary, but we’d say yes. The ad, directed by Martin Scorsese, shows Chalamet in full movie-star mode: dodging paparazzi, starring in a movie with Havana Rose Liu, and charming a late-night host. Six months ago, Scorsese and Chalamet sat down for a 30-minute conversation about the ad for GQ (20x longer than the actual commercial), during which Chalamet called it a “total short film.” That makes sense, seeing as the commercial does not, in fact, reference the scent at all. Chanel does get its money’s worth, though. When Chalamet finally whispers the name of the fragrance, he does so in an impeccable French accent.
