- Reform of the UNSC was debated 40 years ago
- India has repeatedly demanded to become a permanent member
- India is progressing rapidly in terms of science and technology
PM Modi is scheduled to visit the United States on Tuesday, where he is scheduled to participate in a program to be held at the United Nations on the occasion of the International Yoga Day on June 21. On the other hand, India has repeatedly demanded to join the UNSC (United Nations Security Council). In the same series, UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) President Saba Korosi said that there is a belief among UNSC member countries that there is a need for good representatives in the Security Council, who have a great responsibility for the welfare of the people and the establishment of peace. Certainly India is one of the countries that can contribute to the good of the world. Regarding India’s candidature for UNSC, Korosi said that India was not among the largest countries when the United Nations Security Council was formed in the past. He further added that the UNSC will be reformed. On the other hand, the matter of reforms has been under discussion for 13 years. The possible need for reform of the UNSC was first discussed 40 years ago but any changes are in the hands of member states.
The UNGA president said in a media briefing that although member states could agree on how to reform the Security Council, such as permanent members, veto rights, what should be a good relationship between the Security Council and perhaps the United Nations. etc. All the work is in the hands of all these member countries.
What did UNGA President Korosi say about India?
India has been perhaps one of the most active advocates for early reform of the Security Council. Describing India as a potential superpower, the UNGA President said, India is progressing rapidly in terms of population, economy, science and technology.
